Soldbuch to Unteroffizier Werner Frantz, a bank employee from Wannsee (known from the 'Endlösung' conference) near Berlin. This Zweitschrift issue Soldbuch was started in March 1945 by the staff of Panzer-Abteilung 302 (Fkl). This Abteilung had fought in Normandy but had been transferred to the Eastern Front to battle the Warsaw Uprising immediately after. This rare unit, designated as 'Funklenk' (Fkl), operated the notorious "Goliath" radio-controlled Sdkfz vehicles that could deliver explosives to a target for remote-controlled detonation. Also used by this Abteilung was the heavy remote-controlled Borgward IV (SdKfz 301) demolition vehicle. On March 26th, three days before his new Soldbuch was started, Frantz was wounded by a shrapnell in his right ring finger during the battles in Eastern Prussia. Without any doubt, the replacement of his Soldbuch was a direct result of the circumstances surrounding his wound. Frantz could stay with the Abteilung, and was awarded the Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz. During 1944, he had also been awarded the Afrika cufftitle and the KVK2. These awards were also confirmed by Pz.Abt.302.

Not much later, Pz.Abt.302 was about completely destroyed and Frantz was transferred to Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 83, part of the 233. Panzer-Division. During the last days of the war he joined the divisional pioneer battallion, the Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 1233. The 233. Panzer-Division did not see any further action until the war's end. Frantz was then captured and sent to work in a mine clearing command ("Minenräumkommando") in Denmark as a POW. He was released in 1948.

The Soldbuch is in a very good condition, with all pages present and fixed. It has a small portrait photo of Frantz, looks like he is wearing a greatcoat. It comes with a few extras:

  • Frantz' Arbeitsbuch with entries from 1933 to 1948.
  • Personalausweis from Minenkomando Dänemark, 1945. His three awards are confirmed on this document.
  • Ausweis for good conduct during his mine clearance duties in Denmark, 1945.
  • Two police documents from his return home after captivity, 1948.
  • One wartime (with stamp Polizeipräsident in Berlin) and three more postwar insurance documents, 1943-1948.
