Extensive Soldbuch grouping to Obergefreiter Egon Henkel. He was an active member of the DJ and Hitlerjugend in the 1930's, and earned the HJ Kreissieger badge (or higher class!). Henkel then joined the Luftwaffe at the age of 17 in 1939. He served with the prestigious Regiment General Göring for two months in the Spring of 1940. Henkel then joined the 4. Batterie of Flak-Regiment 14, and would stay with this same unit for the rest of the war. After the occupation time in France, he saw his first action in the Balkan campaign, then moving to the southern part of the Eastern Front. His Abteilung ended up on the Krim, then retreated to France in the Spring of 1943. Still positioned near Toulon and Taracson in 1944, he became involved in the Allied landings of Operation Dragoon near Marseille mid August 1944. After a short time of fighting against the Americans, Henkel was captured by the end of that same month, August 1944. Serving with the same I./Flak.Rgt.14 for four years, he had assembled a nice list of eight awards: the Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz, the Bulgarian bronzene Medaille mit Kron, the Flak-Kampfabzeichen, the Ostmedaille and the Romanian crusade against communism medal in 1942, then the Krimschild, the Flak-Tätigkeitsabzeichen and the Erdkampfabzeichen in 1943.
The grouping consists of:
- Soldbuch, first issue from October 1939, a 100% complete with all pages and a nice large portrait photo. Interesting entries include a P.08 pstiol, a Mauser pistol, an MP40 he received in southern France, two "Merkblätter", plus of course the great list of 8 awards on page 22.
- Provisional Ausweis for his entry in the Deutsches Jungvolk, 1933.
- Mitglieds-Ausweis for the DJ (HJ), with nice portrait photo and stamps from 1933 to 1939.
- Mitglieds-Karte for the DJ in the HJ-Stamm of Wattenscheid, 1934.
- Bleibenausweis for the Deutsche Jugendherbergen, 1938, with HJ portrait photo.
- Landjahr 1936 Ausweis, with the same HJ portrait photo.
- Führerausweis für Fahrten zur Jugendpflege, 1938, also with HJ portrait photo.
- DJ/HJ Führerausweis, 1938, with promotion to Oberhordenführer and HJ portrait photo.
- A few more documents, including a letter sent by his parents after finally hearing about his capture in January 1945. The letter confirms that he had been a POW since late August 1944.
- Eleven photos of Henkel during his service with Flak.Rgt.14; these include a few in Greece and the East, a postcard sized portrait with his Flak badge in wear, another taken in Auxerre (France) in 1943-'44, and a great one captioned "die letzten Stunden in Saint-Laurent-du-Var". The latter shows Henkel wearing his Krimschild and ground assault badge along with comrades in the Nice suburbs shortly before his capture in the Summer of 1944. This same photo also reveals that he is wearing the HJ Kreissieger badge (or possible Gausieger/Reichssieger, impossible to tell from the photo).
Excellent Soldbuch grouping including a selection of rare Hitlerjugend ID's!
