Document grouping to Unteroffizier Günter Nitschke, a fighter pilot who later became a bomber observer. Joining the Luftwaffe in 1940, Nitschke was admitted to pilot school later that year, flying with the Flugzeugführerschule A/B 118 in Stettin (Sczecin, Poland) until mid 1941, when he was transferred to Jagdfliegervorschule 1 in Kamenz, and shortly after to Jagdfliegerschule 5 in Toussus le Noble, near Paris. The following three years are less clear but on one photo we can see him wearing the pilot's badge in the Beaujon hospital in Paris. By May 1944, Nitschke had transferred from fighter to bomber roles, when he earned the Beobachterabzeichen. Later that year, he was reported with the 5. Staffel of Kampfgeschwader 30 then flying on the Invasion front. On April 15th, 1945, he surrendered to the British in Leeuwarden, Holland.
The grouping consists of:
- Flugbuch, with a total of 507 flights from November 1940 until August 1941, with the forementioned pilot schools in Stettin, Kamenz and Toussus. These include many interesting aircraft types such as the captured North American 57 (NA-57) and the Caudron C-445, among many German types like the Arado Ar 65, 66, 68 and 96. The Flugbuch is a large, luxury hardcover in perfect condition except for the denazification of the cover.
- Award document for the Beobachter-Abzeichen, May 1944, hand signed by Generaloberst Bruno Loerzer, Knight's Cross and Pour le Mérite winner. Bad condition with some damage by tape, and a small tear next to the signature.
- Seven portrait photos of Nitschke, from his youth in the 1930's to his Luftwaffe time and postwar life. These include a great postcard sized studio portrait in flight gear taken in Stettin, and a portrait wearing the cloth Flugzeugführer-Abzeichen in Paris.
- His diary from 1940, detailing his recruit time and his first flights in pilot school in Stettin. Interesting to compare with the entries in the Flugbuch!
- Document from the WASt confirming his last known unit and capture in Holland.
- "Kriegsgefangenenpost" POW Letter sent from P.W. Camp 2231 in England to his parents in 1945.
- Postwar denazification certificate and Frankfurt university ID.
