Wehrpass to Leutnant ing. August Helwig. First issue from May 1936. Helwig followed higher technical studies and graduated as an engineer. He did his 14 months of military service with Beobachtungs-Abteilung 9 in 1936-'37 and was then called up again in Septemer 1939, seeing his first action with Art.Rgt.195 of the 95.ID on the Westwall. He was released again that same winter, likely to complete his studies. When he returned one year later in November 1940, Helwig served with Beobachtungs-Abteilung 29, part of the 29.ID in the Balkan campaign (Serbia and Greece) and on the Eastern Front, but was discharged again in November 1941.

Upon completion of his studies, Helwig was appointed officer candidate in 1943 and joined his old unit again, Art.Rgt.195 of the 95.ID. He saw action on the central sector of the Eastern Front (Bobruisk, Witebsk) and was awarded the EKII in January 1944, added to an earlier Bulgarian award. March 1944, he entered Fahnenjunker school and finally got his promotion to Leutnant in August 1944.

Helwig was now a graduated engineer with extensive field experience with the artillery, not only as Geschützführer but also as "Rechentruppführer", in charge of measuring distances to targets. It was time for an exciting new chapter in his career: he joined the Artillerie-Ausbildungs-Abteilung 271 in August 1944. This at first sight boring training unit was a disguise for a V2 rocket training unit, then based at Schneidemühl! Notice the payment on page 19 confirming he was still in Schneidemühl by November 1944.

Early in 1945, his Abteilung was reorganised in Buddenhagen and renamed with other units into Lehr- und Versuchs-Abteilung z.V.; the units list confirms Helwig joined the 2. Batterie, which was a "Lehr- und Versuchsbatterie" (as opposed to other Batteries tasked with fuel, target reconnaissance etc). Some rockets were fired by this unit from Heek and later, retreating deeper into Germany, from Welmbüttel (Schleswig-Holstein) and Armsen (near Verden east of Bremen).

Mid April 1945, what remained of the Lehr-und-Versuchs-Abteilung was moved to Celle and we can see a final unit entry on page 13: Helwig joined "Grenadier-Regiment z.V. 5". Very likely this last ditch unit formed by former V-2 rocket personnel was part of the V-Waffen-Division "von Gaudecker" (also known as V-Waffen-Verband or Inf.Div. z.V. von Gaudecker). This division fought the US 29th Infantry Division in the last days of the war and then surrendered on the Elbe river. Helwig entered Allied captivity and was released in August 1945.

This rare V2 officer Wehrpass is in very good and complete condition. It comes with two photos showing his EKII award ceremony and nine extra documents, mostly from his POW days including the POW discharge document.
