Soldbuch to Oberwachtmeister Hugo Schulz. First issue from September 1939. The lengthy Luftwaffe career of this Western Prussian can be divided in three main parts. His first chapter was in the earlier 1930's, when he was sent to the Spanish front as soldier of the 5. Batterie of the heavy Flak unit "F/88" of the Legion Condor. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Silber, and two Spanish awards for this time: the Medalla de la Cruz Roja and the Medalla de la Campana. Also notice the very nice extra document allowing him to bring home a silver Spanish Astra 9 mm pistol, awarded to him by his Batterie as a souvenir.
The second chapter starts for Schulz at the outbreak of war, when he was already an Unteroffizier with the 9. Batterie of Flak-Regiment 411, immediately fighting in the Polish campaign with the 4. Armee. In 1940, his Batterie was assigned to the 1. Armee to support the French campaign: Schulz performed well and earned an EKII on June 1st for France. In 1941, the 9./Flak.Rgt.411 supported the Panzergruppe 3 in its attacks on the Eastern Front, in 1942 it followed the 18. Flak-Division also in the East. Schulz kept on adding to his awards list: the Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz for two minor wounds in 1941, the Kampfabzeichen der Flakartillerie and the Ostmedaille followed. But in September 1942, he was hospitalised in Orscha (central Russia) with a thrombosis.
This medical condition would mean the end of his front career, but also the start of a third and most exciting chapter. Schulz now entered a number of experimental anti-aircraft units subordinate to the Reichsluftfahrtministerium; notice the RLM stamps appear throughout the booklet, also signing off his eighth and final award in September 1943, the KVKII mit Schwertern. Mid 1943, Schulz was sent to the "Flakversuchsstelle der Luftwaffe Karlshagen", a secret anti-aircraft missile development center closely connected to the V1 and V2 base in Karlshagen-Peenemünde. Many entries in the Soldbuch reflect his stay there from mid 1943 to early 1945, not only the units page, but also promotion entries, various equipment entries with the "Flakversuchsstelle d.Lw. Karlshagen 1 / Pom.) stamp, a security stamp on page 14, and even the dental record by "Heeres-Zahnstation Peenemünde" from July 1943.
During the last months of the war, Schulz stayed with a few last units in northern Germany, such as schw.Flak.Ers.Abt.60 (east of Hamburg), but also a mysterious zbV staff unit directly subordinate to the OKL (Oberkommando der Luftwaffe), until he was released from service in May 1945. The Soldbuch is in used but very good condition, including the portrait photo, and packed with entries, also listing a private wrist watch and Belgian 7.65 mm pistol among his equipment. It comes with his A4 sized promotion document to Wachtmeister signed by DKiG winner Major Walter Barg as commander of II./Flak.Rgt.411, a document volunteering for another year of service in 1938, and the forementioned confirmation of the personal possession of the Spanish Astra pistol. Also added are a few copies of Bundesarchiv documents.
