Document grouping to bomber and late war fighter pilot Oberfeldwebel Hugo Greeven, who won the Ehrenpokal on 29th of June 1942, and the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 24th of September 1942, two years after escaping death following his crash on the English coast.
Greeven started his flying career with the Luftwaffe in September 1938. His two "Flugbuch" flight books record a total of 1.774 flights, of which an impressive total of 296 (!!!) enemy flights. Detailing his whole career would take too long, but among the highlights are his first 66 Feindflüge, all flown in the Battle of Britain in 1940-'41 with 1./ Kampfgruppe 126, later renamed into 1./ Kampfgeschwader 28. No less than spectacular is his 32th Feindflug over London on 1st of October 1940; Greeven crashed his He 111 in the North Sea about 50 km off Norfolk. Although the entire crew was sighted shortly after in dinghies, Greeven was the only man to surive, after three (!) harsh days of rowing he was picked up by German navy.
Greeven continued his career on the Eastern Front with 2./KG28 and later 2./ Kampfgeschwader 27 "Boelcke", quickly amassing enemy flights and awards, leading to the Ehrenpokal and DKiG mid 1942, and flying 25 (!) supply runs to the encircled troops at Stalingrad in January 1943. A last highlight chapter is his reschooling into a role as fighter pilot with KG27 from November 1944. He now flew the Messerschmitt Bf 109, and was sent to Jagdgeschwader 27 in Schwerin when the KG27 was disbanded late March 1945. On 28th and 29th of April 1945, he flew his last two enemy missions as fighter pilot in the battle of Berlin - very rare late-war entries!
