Grouping to Obergefreiter Artur Folz. Losing his father on the battlefield in 1917, Folz grew up working in the mines in the Saar area. This would also mean he avoided military service until February 1942, when he was called up by the Heer and trained as a Heeresflak soldier. June 1942, Folz entered his field unit: the 3. Kompanie of Fla-Bataillon (mot.) 607, with whom he would serve until the end of the war.
The Bataillon first fought on the central sector of the Eastern Front, and succesfully downed over a dozen Russian airplanes (Il-2, Pe-2, LaGG-5, …) in 1942-'43. Folz was trained as E-Messer and on the Flak 38, but also followed a course as "Feldkoch" (field cook) with the 179. Reserve-Panzer-Division in March 1944. He was awarded the KVKII mit Schwertern in 1945, when his Bataillon was attached to the LXIV. Armeekorps, fighting on the Western Front (Oberrhein area) with the 19. Armee.
