Soldbuch to 3. Offizier Herbert Knabach. First issue from November 1942. Notice the "Soldbuch" title was erased on the cover and page 1 of the Soldbuch, and replaced with stamps "Gebührnisbuch" and "Wehrmachtgefolge". Knabach served on board of a Blockadebrecher, and its personnel were considered cilian auxiliary forces working for the Kriegsmarine.
Knabach earned an early EKII in December 1940 while only 16 years old!! The Blockadebrecher-Abzeichen followed in August 1941. Clearly he excelled in his function on board of a merchant ship, slipping through the Allied naval blockades. Further research could provide the identity of the ship he was on at the time. The 'Reichskleiderkarte' also included in the grouping reveals he later served on the MS Gotenland. Seized by the Germans in Denmark, this ship was notably used to deport 158 Norwegian jews from Oslo to Stettin, where they were transported to Berlin and eventually put on a train to Auschwitz.
By 1944, Knabach studied at the Reichsseefahrtschule Wustrow. He survived the war and continued his career as a naval officer, last as captain and first officer on large long range vessels.
The Soldbuch (Gebührnisbuch) is in excellent and complete condition, including a great portrait photo showing the EKII ribbon on his civilian clothing. It comes with the following extras:
- Studenten-Ausweis from 1944.
- Vierte Reichskleiderkarte, 1944.
- Seefahrtsbuch, June 1973, with portrait photo and many entries until 1981.
- Postwar letter of recommendation and other documents related to his postwar career.
