Soldbuch to Unteroffizier Josef Michalski. First issue from March 1940, when serving with a Luftwaffe construction unit on Norderney. Michalski later trained with the Fliegertechnische Schule 4 in occupied Poland (Kosno and Krakau), and with Flugzeugführerschule C 9 in Altenburg. December 1941, he was sent to the newly formed Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 999, formed as transport group with Ju 52 for the Eastern Front, also taking part in the Demjansk airlift operations.
May 1942, he moved to Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 106, which was then being converted to fly on the new twin-engin Gotha Go 244 tactical transport planes, the powered version of the better known Go 242 military gliders. With this unit, active from late June 1942 on the Southern sector of the Eastern Front, Michalski earned the Fliegerschützen-Abzeichen ohne Blitzbundel as an air gunner on the Go 244. Late December 1942, he moved to I./ Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 172, also active in that same area (Krim, Ukraine), earning the EKII in January 1943.
Michalski's later Flying units include the Kampfgruppe z.b.V. 500 and the Verfügungsstaffel des Generalquartier in Schönwalde (1943), and the Fliegerzielgeschwader 3 in 1944. He ended the war serving in the Wehrmachtstreifendienst, the patrol and disciplinary branch of the Wehrmacht. These men functioned as military police, maintaining discipline and preventing desertion with random ID checks. He operated in Wehrkreis XVII in Austria.
The Soldbuch is in well used but very good condition, complete with all pages and the portrait photo. Interesting entries include a Hungarian M37 pistol, a Luger P.08 pistol, an extra "Fliegerschutze" pay on page 19 referring to his Bordschützen-Schein, and various signatures of "Staffelkapitän" pilot officers.
