- Soldbuch to Obergefreiter Franz Schmitz. Zweitschrift issued by his Kompanieführer of Grenadier-Regiment 78 in August 1944. This regiment was part of the 26. Volksgrenadier-Division which was being formed from the destroyed 26. Infanterie-Division. Schmitz had been serving in the latter on the Eastern front: he was awarded the EKII and the Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in 1943. The 26.VGD was thrown into battle in the Ardennes and tasked to take Bastogne. They immediately suffered heavy casualties, reached and surrounded the city, but couldn't take it.
- At some point, an exact date is difficult to determine, Schmitz moved to Füsilier-Regiment 27, part of the 12. Volksgrenadier-Division. This was another division active in the Ardennes (a.o. Malmedy), so the move likely happend during the Bulge. The last dated entry is on 15th of November, 1944. Considering both the 12.VGD and 26.VGD were decimated in the Ardennes, it is safe to say he was captured there.
- The Soldbuch is in good and complete condition. A portrait photo was never inserted.
