- Grouping to Grenadier Heinrich Ranzenberger, who was called up at the age of 17 to serve with the elite Grossdeutschland division in October 1944. He was still in training with the Panzergrenadier-Ersatz-Regiment Grossdeutschland when his unit was hastily sent to the front as an "Alarmeinheit" in February 1945. The "Grenadier-Bataillon Grossdeutschland" was incorporated in the Panzergrenadier-Division Brandenburg to fight off the Russians in Forst (Lausitz), east of Cottbus. There, Ranzenberger was badly wounded on the 6th of February 1945. Originally earning the Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz, his award was upgraded to the silver grade in April, most likely after an amputation. The poor boy was still 17 years old at that time.
