• SS Soldbuch to Meister der Gendarmerie Richard Karau. First issue from October 1944. Korau was a long time serving police official, with the most senior NCO rank. He was also a WWI veteran, and has the following seven awards listed in his Soldbuch: the Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse, the Frontk√§mpfer-Ehrenkreuz, the Schlesische Adler I. and II. Stufe, the Dienstauszeichnung I. Klasse, the Polizei-Dienstauszeichnung I. Klasse, and the SA Sportabzeichen in Bronze. Notice the rare highest grade of both service awards!
  • Karau had been serving with the Regierungspr√§sidium Oppeln for many years. This city, nowadays Opole in Poland near the Czech border, was declared a Festung in the month this Soldbuch was issued, as the front line was nearing. Mid January 1945, the Russians broke out of the Baranow bridgehead and neared the city, liberating the parts east of the Oder river on January 23rd, 1945. On this exact day, Richard Karau was evacuated to Feldlazarett (mot) 168 in the nearby city of Grottkau (Grodkow, about 40 km west). He was declared dead on that same day. The exact circumstances of his death are unclear, though they must of course be directly related to the liberation of Oppeln. The Festungskommandant, Graf von Peil, committed suicide that same day. Karau is listed on the Volksbund, but his body has not been retrieved.
  • Soldbuch in excellent and complete condition. Very nice portrait photo showing some of his awards in wear.
