At that time, Gugerell was serving as a reconnaissance soldier with Aufklärungs-Abteilung 236, part of the 162. Turk. Infanterie-Division, an infantry division made up of men from the Caucasus and Turkic origins. Gugerell was a born Austrian himself. The division was protecting the Ligurian coast in early 1944. In June 1944, they were sent to the Italian front, fighting in Upper Italy and Rimini. They did not perform very well on the front, and for the remainder of the war, they were sent to the backward lines in Italy to fight against partisans in the area of La Spezia and the Tavo valley. Gugerell was awarded the Erinnerungsmedaille a.d. 13. März 1938 and most likely surrendered with his unit near Padua in May 1945.
