• Soldbuch grouping to Unteroffizier Günter Höppner. First issue from January 1940. This Stettin born soldier was trained on the Infanteriegeschütz and sent to Infanterie-Regiment 478 of the 258. Infanterie-Division in 1940. After the French campaign, he was among the 1/3rd of the 258.ID who were used to form the new 122. Infanterie-Division. Höppner ended up in the 13. Kompanie of Infanterie-Regiment 409, and would see a lot of action on the northern sector of the Eastern Front with this unit: he fought in the area of Sebesch, Leningrad, Staraja Russa, Demjansk and Newel. During these first years, he was awarded the EKII, the Ostmedaille, and the Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz for a first wound sustained at Staraja Russa, soon followed by a second wound in August 1943 and a third wound in October 1943.
  • In 1944, Höppner joined the fighting retreat of the 122.ID from the Narwa front in Estonia to Latvia, where they ended up fighting in the Kurland pocket. Here, the fighting intensified and Höppner collected his next awards: the EKI for Narwa in April 1944, the Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen in Silber and the Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber. He just missed out on the Nahkampfspange as his seventh combat award: he collected a total of 14 close combat days, just one day short to earn the CCC in Bronze. The great list of 14 Nahkampftage added to the Soldbuch mostly mentions places on the Narwa front and in Latvia (including Kurland).  Fighting in Kolberg, March 1945, Höppner began to suffer again from his earlier leg wound. He stayed in hospital until his captivity and survived the war.
